Kate Thompson was born Katherine Rebecca Thompson on February 10, 1878, the third child of Charles Thompson and Sarah Glover. Kate Thompson had two older brothers, Will and Charles, and three younger brothers, Thomas, Robert, and Henry. The Thompson's were from Madison, Georgia, and Kate Thompson worked as a schoolteacher in the Atlanta City School system. Sarah Glover was the first child of Eli Glover and Rebecca Meriwether. Their second daughter, Rebecca Meriwether Glover, married Erasmus Jordan, Eli Glover descended from Captain Eli Glover and his second wife Lucy Seymour Fish.
