McGown Hardware Store (Cooperstown, N.Y.)
Horace M. Hooker and Stephen G. Browning opened a retail hardware store in the village of Cooperstown, N.Y. in 1858. They specialized in stoves and tin and iron building supplies, and had a tin shop on the second floor.
David Jefferson McGown began working as a clerk in the store in 1862 and became a junior partner in 1870, when Hooker bought out Browning. McGown bought out Hooker in 1901, renaming the business "D. J. McGown's Hardware Store." The McGown family continued the business through three generations, before selling it to the Bruce Hall Corporation in 1982.
