Hide Profile

Horace M. Hooker and Stephen G. Browning opened a retail hardware store in the village of Cooperstown, N.Y. in 1858. They specialized in stoves and tin and iron building supplies, and had a tin shop on the second floor.

David Jefferson McGown began working as a clerk in the store in 1862 and became a junior partner in 1870, when Hooker bought out Browning. McGown bought out Hooker in 1901, renaming the business "D.
