The Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs has responsibility for promoting the enrollment, retention, academic advancement, and graduation of students. In 1963 the position was established as the Office of the Dean of Student Affairs and, in 1971, elevated to Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs. Past incumbents of the position are George S. Murphy, Jr. (1967-1977), Howard F. Hunt (1977-1978, acting), Richard H. Armitage (1978-1981), and Joseph W. Watson (1981-present).
