Douglas T. Nelson (b. 1921, Astoria, Oregon-d. Feb. 7, 2005), U.S. Air Force officer, began his military career as a member of the Oregon National Guard and in 1942 graduated from the Army Air Corps flying school with a commission and his pilot wings. During World War II, he flew combat missions in the China-Burma-India Theater of Operations. After the War he was assigned to the Strategic Air Command (SAC), 33rd Fighter Group. In the late 1940s he was a member of the UN Truce Force in Palestine and a lead crew aircraft commander, 509th Bombardment Group. During the 1950s, General Nelson served as an aircraft commander, 306th Bombardment Wing; at SAC headquarters in the Directorate of Operations; and with the 28th Bombardment Wing and 821st Air Division. Following a number of key assignments including with HQ 15th Air Force, 14th Aerospace Division, and SAC headquarters, in 1974 he became vice commander, Aeronautical Systems Division, Air Force Systems Command, which is responsible for research and development of all Air Force aircraft, engines, and missiles. General Nelson retired late that year.
