Charles Gerhardt was a United States (U.S.) lieutenant, 20th U.S. Infantry Regiment; lieutenant and captain, 8th U.S. Infantry Regiment; major, 10th U.S. Infantry Regiment; colonel, 4th, 49th, 36th, and 16th U.S. Infantry Regiments; brigadier general, Intermediate Zone and later Base 7, Service of Supply, American Expeditonary Force; brigadier general assigned to 35th Infantry Division; commander, 183rd Infantry Brigade and 161st Depot Brigade; Chief of Staff, 76th Infantry Division.
