Leigh Richmond Brewer was born in Berkshire, Vermont, on January 20, 1839. He graduated from Hobart College in 1863 and from the General Theological Seminary in 1866. He served as pastor of several churches in New York state during the 1860s and 1870s. He became the first Episcopal Bishop of Montana, serving from 1880 until his death on August 28, 1916.
