Gary Barker Hansen was born in Ogden, Utah, in 1935. He attended Utah State Agricultural College (later USU) and graduated with a BS in 1957. He served in the US Army 1957-1959 and from 1959 to 1961 was a missionary in Great Britain for the LDS church. Hansen married Helen Ure in 1962 and had 4 children. Back at USU, he received an MS in economics in 1963. That summer he co-authored "The Richest Hole on Earth" with Leonard Arrington. Hansen continued his studies at Cornell University and spent a year as a Fulbright Scholar at the London School of Economics in 1965-66. He received his PhD from Cornell in 1970. In 1967 Hansen accepted an appointment as an Assistant Professor of Economics at USU. During 31 years at USU he served as a professor of Economics and professor of Management and Human Resources. Hansen became a professor emeritus in 2000. During his career Hansen published 110 books, chapters, articles, research reports, and documents, and he made over 150 professional presentations.
