Ball, Ernest R.
Variant namesErnest R. Ball (1878-1927), a native of Cleveland, Ohio, was a nationally known composer and singer, regarded by some as the greatest minstrel of his time. Songs such as "When Irish Eyes are Smiling" and "Mother Machree" made his national reputation. This latter song was one of several that Ball wrote in tribute to his mother, Anna (Krocker) Ball, to whom he was extremely close. Ball co-wrote the song with Chauncey Olcott. Ernest R. Ball (born Roland Ernest Ball) was an only child and his father, Ernest Adelbert Ball, died when young Ernest was only a year old. His mother raised him by herself, thus fostering this close relationship. Ball was inducted into the Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1970.
