New Mexico. Governor (1951-1954 : Mechem)
Edwin L. Mechem was born in Alamogordo, New Mexico in 1912. He was admitted to the New Mexico Bar in 1939. He served as a land surveyor for the U.S. Reclamation Service, 1932-1933 and as an investigator for the Federal Bureau of Investigations during World War II. He served four terms as Governor of New Mexico: first and second terms, 1951-1954; third term, 1957-1958; and fourth term, 1961-1962. In 1962 Mechem resigned from the governorship of New Mexico to become a United States Senator.
