Robert E. Jones was born in 1912 near Rattlesnake Creek in Missoula, Montana, and resided there until his death in 1998 at the age of 86. Jones attended the University of Montana--Missoula and graduated in 1934. During his college years, Jones joined the Phi Sigma Kappa fraternity and continued his involvement in the organization for many decades. Later, Jones was involved in issues related to Missoula’s growth. He was a notable leader and consultant in the construction and support of the Hoerner Waldorf pulp mill, a new Legion Hall, and St. Patrick Hospital. However, his most substantial commitment to Missoula was his initiative in the Missoula County Citizens Bridge Committee, a 1950s organization intent on building three new bridges over the Clark Fork River.
