When the Medical University of South Carolina opened its first session on Monday, November 8th 1824, it operated as a proprietary school in which the faculty financed the entire school. Faculty sold admission tickets to their lectures which they then redeemed for payment. While the faculty ran the academics of the school, the Medical Society of South Carolina was the governing body in financial matters. As the school evolved, the faculty acquired more influence in governance of the college. After the 1908 Flexner report which was sharply critical of the school, the Medical College was transferred to state ownership, which included state funding, and the proprietary system ended.
