Winslow was a member of the Second Missouri Volunteers under the command of Sterling Price. Winslow served one year in New Mexico and one in Mexico itself where he fought at the Battle of Santa Cruz. In 1849 he took passage from Boston to San Francisco on the Brig Josephine, arrived in California in 1850 or late 1849, and traveled in California.
