H. Aldous Dixon succeeded Louis L. Madsen as the ninth president of Utah State Agricultural College in 1953. Dixon's administrative philosophy was described succinctly in the title of his inaugural address: "Partners in the Common Welfare."
President Dixon had been a life-long practitioner of teamwork. Born in Provo in 1890, he received his Bachelors degree from Brigham Young University, and be¬gun teaching at Weber Academy in 1914, an institution operated by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-¬day Saints (Mormon). President Dixon continued his education at the University of Chicago in 1917, earning the masters degree. In 1919 he accepted the appointment as president of Weber Academy. After a year as president Dixon entered the field of public education as superintendent of the Provo City Schools. Upon the death of his father in 1924 he temporarily left to assume the responsibilities of the family banking business. He returned as superintendent in 1932.
Acquiring a doctorate of education in 1937 from the University of Southern California, Dixon again returned to the presidency at Weber, which by then had become part of the State system. It was from this position that the USAC Board of Trustees convinced him to take the helm in Logan.
After only a year in the presidency, Dixon was drafted by the Republican Party to run for the vacated congressional seat held by the embattled Douglas Stringfellow. With much trepidation and thought, President Dixon resigned the presidency in October of 1954 to campaign and ultimately win the congressional seat.
Although many of President Dixon's ideas would not reach fruition while he was in office, he laid much of the ground¬work that subsequently enabled the administration of President Daryl Chase to rebound from the College's controversial past and forge a new future.
