A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine in 1845, Robert King Stone practiced general medicine in Washington, D.C. In February 1857 a mysterious intestinal illness struck visitors to the National Hotel in Washington. The Washington, D.C. Board of Health appointed a committee to determine the causes. A member of the board but not of the investigating committee, Stone nevertheless undertook his own inquiry.
