Harwood Coal Company.

Hide Profile

The Harwood Coal Co. was incorporated on February 2, 1907, as the successor to Calvin Pardee and Co. The company operated anthracite coal mines near Hazleton, Pa. On May 25, 1907, the company's stock was acquired by Harwood Electric Power Co. Two years later, control passed to The Harwood Electric Co. Under a May 1, 1917, contract the Harwood Coal Co. became a joint concern with the Cranberry Creek Coal Co. (a subsidiary of Lehigh Coal and Navigation Co.), with Cranberry Creek managing its operations and selling its products. In 1920, The Harwood Electric Co. merged into Pennsylvania Power & Light and brought the Harwood Coal Co. with it. The Harwood Coal Co., however, soon began to feel the financial impact of having to sell its coal to The Harwood Electric Co. at discount prices. After a decade of decline, the company was dissolved in 1932.
