In 1965, the Standard Oil (Indiana) Foundation provided the University of Minnesota with two monetary awards in the amount of $1,500 each to be given to faculty members who made outstanding contributions to undergraduate education. In 1967, the award was renamed the Standard Oil Foundation-Horace T. Morse Award, after Horace T. Morse, dean of General College, who died in 1966. Members of the All-University Council on Liberal Education were responsible for selecting the recipients. Any full-time faculty member holding the rank of instructor or higher and had been employed at the University for at least three academic years was eligible for nomination. In 1974, the name of the award changed to the Horace T. Morse-AMOCO Foundation Award. The name was again changed in 1988 to the Horace T. Morse-Minnesota Alumni Association Award, after the Alumni Association replaced the AMOCO Foundation as the financier of the award.
