Thomas Clinton opened a store on Main Street in Black Rock, N.Y., in Jan. 1823. He sold dry goods and groceries. George McKnight & Co., at 202 Main Street, Buffalo, N.Y., is listed in the 1832 Buffalo city directory as a wholesale dealer in groceries, paints, oils, dyewoods, and dyestuffs.
