Whiton, son of Chauncey and Lucinda A. Whiton of Westford (Conn.), was a missionary for the American Missionary Association stationed in Liberia. He sailed in June 1863 aboard the ship Mary Caroline Stevens, arriving in Freetown, Sierra Leone by late July; on 29 July he married the only single woman of the group, Miss Danforth. Other members of the party were the Rev. Kistler, the Rev. Adams, Mrs. Burns, and Mrs. Hinman.
The American Missionary Association was an interdenominational abolitionist organization formed in 1846 from several early missionary groups. The AMA supported foreign missions until the Civil War.
