Graduate instruction began at North Carolina State University in 1893, with the first Master's degree conferred in 1894, and the first doctoral degree confered in 1926. Since that time, the Graduate School has grown steadily and has provided instruction and facilities for advanced study and research in the fields of agriculture and life sciences, design, education, engineering, natural resources, humanities and social sciences, management,physical and mathematical sciences, textiles, and veterinary medicine.

The Fort Bragg-Pope Air Force Base Graduate Program branch is historically connected to North Carolina State University's School of Liberal Arts through the Division of Continuing Education. Professors from NC State and East Carolina University taught courses to Army personnel. The school was operating as early as 1947 and taught courses leading to a Bachelor of Arts degree beginning in September 1964. Masters degree programs were later added. The program is now called the Fort Bragg-Pope Air Force Base Center and has been administered by Fayetteville State University since 1973.

In 1958, a graduate dean was re-established at North Carolina State College. As of 2010, North Carolina State University's Graduate School offers over 160 Master's degrees and more than 60 doctoral degrees and is a nationally recognized leader in all traditional disciplines as well as emerging disciplines, including genomics, biotechnology, biomedical engineering, nanotechnology, natural resources, and geographic imaging science. The graduate program includes nearly 3500 full-time masters students, and more than 2600 PhD candidates. In addition, over 300 students are pursuing degrees as Doctor of Veterinary Medicine, and 900 advanced degree students are enrolled in various North Carolina State lifelong learning programs.
