Steaffens (1926-2009) served in the Navy during World War II and the Korean War.

In World War II, he served as a radioman aboard the USS Whitney and the USS Jason, and during the Korean War he was based in Adak (Alaska) monitoring Russian radio frequencies. He received a bachelor's degree in history from Ripon College and eventually settled in Stoughton (Wisconsin).
