Lois Elliot was born in Cincinnati, Ohio, on July 3, 1931. She received a B. A. in Psychology from Bryn Mawr College in 1953 and a Ph.D. in Experimental Psychology from Cornell University in 1956. Elliot joined the Northwestern University School of Speech as Professor of Communicative Disorders in 1976. She directed the Neurobiology Training Program between 1976 and 1984 and headed the Program in Audiology and Hearing Sciences from 1976 to 1995. Elliott also helped design and coordinate the curriculum for the Human Communication Sciences, a premedical, undergraduate program. She had planned to retire at the end of 1995, but died on October 1, 1995, from complications following a stroke.
Between 1976 and 1991, Elliot received four major grants for research in speech processing and auditory discrimination in handicapped children from the U.S. Office of Education (1976–1979), the National Institute of Neurological and Communicative Disorders and Stroke (1977-1982 and 1983-1991), and the National Science Foundation (1979-1983). She also published numerous articles and several chapters for books on communicative disorders and presented papers at various conferences on communicative disorders.
