A crisis erupted in the Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod during the synod leadership of Dr. Jacob A.O. Preus (1969-80). Preus initiated an investigation of the faculty of Concordia Seminary in order to purge the school of liberal-minded faculty whose approach to biblical interpretation was based upon modern historical criticism rather than on inerrancy. Moderates within the LCMS left the church over the conflict, forming the Association of Evangelical Lutheran Churches in 1976. In 1986, the AELC merged with the Lutheran Church in America and the American Lutheran Church to form the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America.
