James Lloyd Abbot was born June 26, 1918, in Mobile, Alabama. He was commissioned as ensign in the U.S. Navy in 1939, and advanced through grades to rear admiral in 1966. He was commander of the U.S. Navy Support Force, Antarctica from 1967 to 1969.
