Formed as James Horner ? produced tool steel and and related finished products such as files; renamed Horner ? renamed Pompton Steel and Iron Company (James Ludlum, President) ca. 1877 at which time production of railroad car springs was added; management of company assumed by William E. Ludlum upon the death of his father James; incorporated in 1898 with change in name to Ludlum Steel and Iron Company; controlling interest owned by Corning family of New York State by 1906 as the result of loans made to the company following a 1903 flood; operations shifted to a new factory in Watervliet, Albany County, New York in 1907; name changed to Ludlum Steel Company in 1915.
