Ira L. Reiss was born on December 8, 1925 in New York City. He earned his B.S. in 1949 from Syracuse University, his M.A. in 1951 and Ph.D. in 1953 from the Pennsylvania State University. Before joining the faculty at the University of Minnesota, Dr. Reiss was a professor at Bowdoin College (1953-1955), College of William and Mary (1955-1959), Bard College (1959-1961) and the University of Iowa (1961-1969).

Dr. Reiss came to the University of Minnesota in 1969 as a professor of sociology and director of the Family Study Center. His areas of research include sexuality, gender roles, and family, and the social concerns related to these areas. Dr. Reiss retired from the University faculty in 1996 as professor emeritus.
