Alice Christiana Gertrude Thompson was born in 1847 in Barnes, England. She was the daughter of Thomas James Thompson and Christiana Weller. Thomas James was a wealthy widower. His grandfather, Dr. Thomas Pepper Thompson of Liverpool had immigrated to Jamaica where he had acquired sugar plantations in the mid‐18th century. Thomas Pepper Thompson’s son, James, had a Creole mistress of mixed parentage who produced Thomas James Thompson as James’s illegitimate son. When James died in Jamaica, Thomas Pepper Thompson left his fortune to his grandson, Thomas James Thompson. Before he married Christiana, Thompson had married previously, but his wife had died in 1844. Shortly thereafter he remarried to Christiana Weller, a concert pianist with a promising career that she left behind for Thompson. Thompson’s friend, the prominent author Charles Dickens, was a witness at Thomas and Christiana’s wedding.
