Sulzberger, Frank L. (Frank Leopold), 1887-1981
Frank L. Sulzberger, a businessman and philanthropist whose beneficiaries included a broad range of institutions, died Saturday at his home in Chicago. He was 93 years old.
Mr. Sulzberger had been president and chairman of the board of the Enterprise Paint Manufacturing Company. From 1935 to 1938, he was president of the Jewish Charities of Chicago, predecessor organization to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago. He also served on its board of directors for many years. A lifetime trustee of the University of Chicago, Mr. Sulzberger served at various times as officer, chairman or member of 18 committees at the school. He was also active in the financial support of black colleges in the 1930's.
Mr. Sulzberger helped found the Chicago chapter of the American Jewish Committee and served on the Joint Distribution Committee, organized to provide food to needy families; the Illinois Public Aid Commission; the Community Fund, predecessor to United Way; the Community Trust, and the national Committee for Economic Development.
After two years of study at the University of Chicago, in his native city, Mr. Sulzberger joined his father's paint company at the age of 17.
