Harvard University Press

Harvard University Press (HUP) is a publishing house established on January 13, 1913, as a division of Harvard University, focused on academic publishing. It is a member of the Association of American University Presses. The press maintains offices in Cambridge, Massachusetts, and in London, England. The Board of Syndics is a 12-person board comprised of senior Harvard faculty members. While the Board of Syndics is not a governing body of the Harvard University Press, every book published by the HUP must undergo review by and be approved by the Board of Syndics.

<p>Although Harvard may be said to have been a home to printing since 1643 when Henry Dunster, first president of Harvard College, inherited his wife’s printing press, plates, and paper, it was not until January 13, 1913, that the Harvard Corporation established the entity known as Harvard University Press.</p>

The Harvard University Press was established by the Corporation as a separate department of the University in 1913. It acted as both a printing and publishing organization but in 1942 the University Printing Office, which was started in 1872, was re-established as a separate unit, and Harvard University Press became responsible only for publishing activities.
