St. James Gilpin (1851-1934) and Cordelia (Reese) Gilpin (1858-1928); St. James Gilpin was a prominent African American business, civic and religious leader in Richmond, Virginia, one of the founders and president of the Richmond Beneficial Insurance Company and a director in the Consolidated Bank and Trust Company. St. James and Cordelia had 9 children including: Emily (Gilpin) Chambers was the eldest of four daughters, teacher, married to John W. Chambers and had with him two sons, in 1938 she assumed the presidency of the United Order of Tents, a position she held until her death in 1970; Zenobia G. Gilpin was the youngest child, married in 1943 to Welton H. She returned to Richmond in 1926. Although she went by her maiden name, Dr. Gilpin was . St. Philip Hospital in Richmond opened in 1920 as a general hospital for African Americans. Affiliated with it were the St. Philip School of Nursing and the St. Philip Hospital Postgraduate Clinic for Negro Physicians, all under the oversight of the Medical College of Virginia. Beginning in 1931, the clinic ran for two weeks every summer and provided attendees with class, lecture, laboratory and hands-on patient opportunities. Other children included Alfred and Kate.
