Ramsay, Nathaniel, 1741-1817

RAMSEY, Nathaniel, (Brother of David Ramsay), a Delegate from Maryland; born in Lancaster County, Pa., May 1, 1741; was graduated from the College of New Jersey (now Princeton University) in 1767; a signer of the declaration of freemen of Maryland; delegate to the Maryland convention of 1775; appointed captain in Smallwood's Maryland Regiment January 14, 1776; joined the Continental Army in July 1776 and was promoted to lieutenant colonel of the Third Regiment, Maryland Line, December 10, 1776; retired from the army January 1, 1781; practiced law in Cecil County, Md., 1781-1783 and in Baltimore 1783-1790; Member of the Continental Congress in 1786 and 1787; appointed United States marshal for Maryland by President Washington and served from 1790 to 1798; naval officer of the port of Baltimore 1794-1817; died in Baltimore, Md., October 23, 1817; interment in the burial ground of the First Presbyterian Church.

<p>Nathaniel Ramsey (May 1, 1741– October 23, 1817) was an American lawyer and soldier from Cecil County, Maryland. Ramsey fought in the Revolutionary War, and was a member of the Congress of the Confederation.</p>

<p>Ramsey was born in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. He was the elder brother of David Ramsay, though the brothers spelled their name differently. He graduated from the College of New Jersey (later Princeton University) in 1767 and then read law. He settled in northeastern Maryland, and was admitted to the bar in Cecil County in 1771. Ramsey was married to Margaret Jane Peale, known to her family as Jenny, about 1771. Margaret Jane Peale Ramsey often followed the Continental Army following the Battle of Brooklyn.</p>

<p>Margaret died in 1788. Ramsey remarried in 1790 to Charlotte Hall, daughter of Colonel Aquilla Hall (1727 - 1779), a prominent citizen of Harford County, Maryland.</p>
