Anti-Defamation League (ADL)
Founded in 1913 by B'nai B'rith, with Sigmund Livingston as its first leader, the ADL's charter states, "The immediate object of the League is to stop, by appeals to reason and conscience and, if necessary, by appeals to law, the defamation of the Jewish people. Its ultimate purpose is to secure justice and fair treatment to all citizens alike and to put an end forever to unjust and unfair discrimination against and ridicule of any sect or body of citizens." The Anti-Defamation League was founded by B'nai B'rith as a response to attacks on Jews; the then recent contentious conviction of Leo Frank was mentioned by Adolf Kraus when he announced the creation of ADL. Livingston served as the ADL's chairman until his death in 1946.

Anti-Defamation League, originally Anti-Defamation League of B’nai B’rith, advocacy organization established in Chicago in 1913 to fight anti-Semitism and other forms of bigotry and discrimination. Its activities include assessing hate crimes and anti-Semitism in various countries, assisting law-enforcement agencies in investigating and prosecuting extremists, providing antibias and diversity training, and publishing Holocaust education curricula. The headquarters of the Anti-Defamation League (ADL) are in New York City, and the ADL also has about 30 regional offices in the United States and an office in Israel.

In 1913, the founders of the Anti-Defamation League laid out its mission: “to stop the defamation of the Jewish people and to secure justice and fair treatment to all.” In each decade since, ADL’s mission statement has remained as relevant as it was then. For one hundred years, ADL has been a force for positive change in the U.S., championing our nation’s values and fighting against hatred and extremism. While the core mission has not changed, ADL has come a long way since it began in 1913. Today ADL is an internationally recognized leader in the fight against prejudice, bigotry and hate.
