Rolanda, Rosa, 1895-1970

Rosa Rolanda; Rosemonde Cowan; Rose Rolando; Mrs. Miguel Covarrubias; born September 6, 1895; died March 25, 1970; American multidisciplinary artist, dancer, and choreographer; born in Azusa, California; father: Henry Charles Cowan; mother: Guadalupe Ruelas; dancer in Broadway revues from 1916; became involved with Miguel Covarrubias in 1924; photographs were used in Covarrubias' books. Island of Bali (1937) and Mexico South: Isthmus of Tehuantepec (1946); work was also featured in the "Ameridinian" issue of Wolfgang Paalen's journal DYN, published in 1943; experimented with photograms in 1920s or early 1930s; probably began painting around 1926; Rolanda and Covarrubias married in 1930, and by 1935 settled in Tizapan El Alto, close to Mexico City; Rolanda exhibited her paintings in a solo show at the Galeria Souza in Mexico City, 1952; Covarrubias separated from Rolanda for relationship with Rocío Sagaón by 952; Rolanda was producing works, such as Autorretrato (self-portrait), conveying her innermost turmoils onto canvas

She died in 1970 in Mexico City, Mexico.

Rosa Rolanda, Rosamonde Cowen [sic]; married Rosa Rolanda, a stage dancer, and the two traveled to Bali for a lengthy honeymoon, 1930; Covarrubias returned to Bali in 1933 with a Guggenheim Fellowship to research the culture, resulting in his book Island of Bali (1937)
