JONES, Noble Wimberly, (Father of George Jones), a Delegate from Georgia; born in Lambeth, near London, England, in 1723; immigrated to the United States with his parents, who settled in Savannah, Ga., in 1733; studied medicine and practiced in Savannah 1756-1774; member of the colonial assembly in 1755, 1756, 1760-1762, 1764, 1768, 1769, 1771, and 1772, and served as speaker in 1768 and 1769; member of the council of safety and the Provincial Congress in 1775; member of the State house of representatives in 1777 and 1778; moved to Charleston, S.C., in 1778; captured at the fall of Charleston in 1780 and imprisoned at St. Augustine, Fla.; exchanged in 1781; moved to Philadelphia, Pa., in 1781 and engaged in the practice of medicine; Member of the Continental Congress, accredited to Georgia, in 1781 and 1782; returned to Savannah, Ga., in 1782 and resumed his profession; again a member of the State house of representatives in 1783; president of State constitutional convention in 1795; died in Savannah, Ga., January 9, 1805; interment in Bonaventure Cemetery.

<p>Noble Wimberly Jones (c. 1723 – January 9, 1805) was an American physician and statesman from Savannah, Georgia. A leading Georgia patriot in the American Revolution, he served as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1781 and 1782.</p>

<p>Born in Lambeth, England, he immigrated to North America with his parents, who settled in Savannah in 1733, the first group of white settlers of the Province of Georgia. He was often known by his full name to distinguish him from his father, Noble Jones, who became one of the leading officials of the Province of Georgia.</p>

<p>As a youth, Jones served in the militia under James Oglethorpe, helping to protect the province from Native Americans and the Spanish. Jones accumulated thousands of acres of land, including his estate at Wormsloe, in the young colony. His planting interests, particularly in rice lands along the Ogeechee River, contributed considerably to his income.</p>
