Panhandle Pen Women
In 1920, a year before wildcatters first struck oil here, writers were gathering in Amarillo with the goal of promoting the art and the importance of literature. ~~ That association has never stopped meeting. ~~ With your help, the Texas High Plains Writers can document another hundred years of the hardworking people, beautiful places, and wonderful stories of our region. ~~ Your donation will help writers and readers from all corners of our diverse community that spans more than 20 counties in Texas. Members of the Texas High Plains Writers enjoy informative presentations at bi-monthly meetings, many times from bestselling and award-winning authors or other industry professionals in addition to online resources. The group also provides scholarships for area students with the goal of promoting education and literacy. ~~ That’s been the group’s continuing mission since Laura V. Hamner and Phebe K. Warner formed Panhandle Pen Women on April 20, 1920, at the Amarillo Hotel. Though the name has changed to reflect its expanding inclusiveness, becoming the Panhandle Professional Writers in 1987 and assuming its current name in 2015, the goal has never wavered. ~~ And now, we humbly ask that you please help us ensure another century of service to the Panhandle community.
