Panama Canal Commission Established by act of Oct 1, 1979, as amended (22 U.S.C. 3611). U.S. responsibility terminated by stipulation of the Panama Canal Treaty of 1977, which transferred responsibility for the Panama Canal to the Republic of Panama, effective Dec. 31, 1999. Commission terminated by act of Sept. 30, 2004 (118 Stat. 1140). Panama Canal Company Abolished and superseded by Panama Canal Commission (93 Stat. 454)

Panama Canal Commission, as an independent agency, effective October 1, 1979, by the Panama Canal Act of 1979 (93 Stat. 452), September 27, 1979, superseding the Canal Zone Government and the Panama Canal Company. Functions: Operates and maintains the Panama Canal and associated facilities in cooperation with the Republic of Panama, until the Panama Canal Treaty of 1977 terminates on December 31, 1999, and sovereignty over the canal is assumed by the Republic of Panama

Public Law 104-106 Panama Canal Commission reconstitution of Commission as Government Corporation Section 1101 of the Panama Canal Act of 1979 (22 U.S. C. 3611) is amended to read as follows: Sec. 1101. (a) For the purposes of managing, operating, and maintaining the Panama Canal and its complementary works, installations and equipment, and of conducing operations incident thereto, in accordance with the Panama Canal Treaty of 1977 and related agreements, the Panama Canal Commission is established as a wholly owned government corporation within the executive branch of the Government of the United States.
