Also known as her pseudonym, Marry Forrest, published an anthology of Southern female poets in 1860 titled "Women of the South Distinguished in Literature." This anthology has helped scholars come to know many female 19th century poets that otherwise would've been left in obscurity, yet there is little known of the author herself.
<p>
It's worth noting that Julia began a correspondence with the Providence, Rhode Island poetess, Sarah Helen Whitman, that led them to an intimate friendship from 1856-1863. With that correspondence, we've come to know a little more about both women.
<p>
See Catherine Kunce's book "The Correspondence of Sarah Helen Whitman and Julia Deane Freeman" for a thorough compilation and examination of the friendship.
