The new administrative assistant,
who started playing drums
professionally while he was studying
commercial art at Oklahoma State
University, has been a member of the
Fort Worth local musicians' union
for 15 years and he said he still plays
occasional weekend gigs.
Lively currently owns an
advertising agency in Dallas. He has
been doing commercial art work for
other agencies and advertisers
through this agency since 1964. From
1960 to 1964, he was art director for
another advertising agency in Dallas
and prior to that, art director for an
agency in Fort Worth "for many
years," he said.
Lively has done the cover art for six
Lab Band record albums and has
written album liner and program
notes for the bands. He has written
several articles about the Lab Band
program for various publications and
is currently working on a book.

Already established as a successful
commercial artist, professional
drummer and writer, J. Frank Lively
of Dallas has added a new notch to his
career. He is now administrative
assistant for the North Texas State
University Lab Band program.
Lively fills the position vacated by
the death of Ken Elliot last May.
Elliot was one of the Lab Band's
charter members and had served as
administrative assistant since 1971,
when he retired from the U.S. Air
Force after a 23-year career.
As administrative assistant, Lively
said he will be concerned with lab
band details and office work that
Leon Breeden, Lab Band director,
doesn't have time to do. With nine lab
bands in operation during the regular
semesters, there are a lot of details to
take care of, he said.
Lively said he has always been
interested in and close to the NTSU
Lab Band program. "I've followed
the program since its inception in
1947," he said. "And Leon has always
