COMLY, John, 1773-1850; b. 19 Nov. 1773, Byberry, Pa., s. Issac Comly, Jr., and Asenath (Hampton) Comly; 1794, teacher at Byberry School. 1801, Westtown School as a teacher for one year; m., 1803, Rebecca Budd (d.1832) of Mt. Holly, N.J. Five children. She had been a Westtown teacher; Settled on a farm in Byberry, Pa. 1804, opened a school for girls. 1810, the school was changed to one for boys, or one authority says for both sexes. 1815, discontinued the school; 1810, appeared as a minister, recored 1813. Travelled to New Eng., N.Y., Ohio, Md., and nearer home; He was a surveyor, and was often able to settle conflicting claims and disputes among neighbors. Kept a journal or diary, printed in 1853; Published with his brother, Isaac Comly, a periodical called Friends Miscellany; d. 17 Aug. 1850, Byberry, Pa., in his 77th year.
