Fox, George, 1624-1691
George Fox. 1624-1691. English religious leader. Founder of the Society of Friends (or Quakers). Began preaching in his home neighborhood (1647-48), calling his society the "Friends of Truth"; preached the superiority of God-given inspiration (or inward light) over scriptural authority or creeds; made missionary journeys to Scotland (1657), Ireland (1669), North America and West Indies (1671-72), Holland (1677, 1684); frequently persecuted and imprisoned. His Journal, revised by a committee directed by William Penn, appeared in 1694; also wrote A Collection of ...Epistles (pub. 1698) and Gospel-Truth Demonstrated (pub. 1706).
