LINDLEY, Jacob, 1744-1814; born 1744-11-18 in New Garden Township, Chester County, PA; son of Jonathan and Deborah (Halliday) Lindley; 1774 had a friendship with Anthony Benezet; known to have spoken with both General Howe and with General Washington against war; married (1st) Hannah Miller (died 1798); 1793 attended Yearly Meeting at Philadelphia despite risk of Yellow Fever; later went on a missionary journey to the Indians near Detroit, MI, and Niagara Falls, NY, with Joseph Moore and John Elliott, and met William Savery and John Parrish at Detroit; 1797 was active in founding of Westtown School; in this year he also started on a journey to Upper
Canada with Samuel Lee as guide. Others who went were Oliver Paxon, James Langstaff and Joshua Sharpless; died 1814-06-12 after an accident near his home in which he was thrown from his chaise and received a broken neck. Some feel he died suddenly before he was thrown out.
