Mencken, H.L. (Henry Louis), 1880-1956
H.L. Mencken; Henry Louis Mencken (September 12, 1880 – January 29, 1956) was an American journalist, essayist, satirist, cultural critic, and scholar of American English. Born in Baltimore, spoke German growing up. Longtime contributor to the Baltimore Sun and co-founder (with George Jean Nathan) of The American Mercury in 1924. Married Sara Haardt in 1930. Died in Baltimore in 1956.
