Vernon Martin, director of Library Services at Morningside College since 1970, has been named head of the art and music department in the Hartford, Conn., Public Library.
Martin, 45, will leave his Morningside post Dec. 31.
In addition to his duties as librarian, Martin taught freshman seminars in music at Morningside and produced a college music program on KMNS Radio. He was a coordinator for Project OUTS for Common Cause and has been active in the Sioux City Volunteer Bureau and American Interprofessional Institute.
Martin is also well known as a composer of electronic music. He has been honored annually for the last six years [with] awards from the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP) for general production of works with a unique value.
An orchestral piece by Martin captured one of the two top awards in the Iowa Composers Competition last spring and his works have been performed by leading symphony orchestras...

Vernon Martin of Staten Island, New York City, N.Y., has joined the library staff at North Texas State University as a music librarian.
Martin, who received the master of science in library science from Columbia University in 1965, has worked as a music librarian for Columbia and for the New York Public Library.
He is active as a composer, chiefly in chamber opera music, and assisted in the preparations for the opening of the new Library - Museum of the Performing Arts at Lincoln Center in New York City. He holds the B.M. degree in composition from the University of Oklahoma.
Martin has held the Austro-American Society Scholarship for study in Salzburg, Austria.
