W.C. SYPHAX JR. DIES
William Custis Syphax Jr., 83, a retired official of the Department of Labor who headed committees of the Washington Urban League, died Feb. 2 at the Presbyterian Home of the District of Columbia. He had Parkinson's disease.
A fourth-generation Washingtonian and a lifelong resident of the city, Mr. Syphax was a graduate of Dunbar High School and Howard University. He was a graduate student at George Washington University. During World War II, he served in the Army Air Forces.
Mr. Syphax began his career with the Labor Department in 1937 in the U.S. Employment Service. After World War II, he was assigned to the Manpower Administration, and he became a veterans employment representative in the District of Columbia. He retired in 1973.
Survivors include his wife of 47 years, Orieanna Collins Syphax of Washington and a brother, Dr. Burke Syphax, also of Washington.
