Katharine G. Abraham is Professor of Economics and Survey Methodology. Her published research includes papers on the work and retirement decisions of older Americans; how government policies affect employers’ choices concerning employment and hours over the business cycle; the effects of financial aid on the decision to attend college; discrepancies in alternative measures of employment, wages and hours; and the measurement of economic activity. She served as Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics from 1993 through 2001 and as a Member of the President’s Council of Economic Advisers from 2011 through 2013. Abraham currently serves on standing academic advisory committees convened by the Congressional Budget Office, Bureau of Economic Analysis, and Federal Reserve Bank of Chicago. She is a Research Associate of the National Bureau of Economic Research and a Research Fellow of the IZA, a member of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, a Distinguished Fellow of the American Economic Association, and an elected Fellow of the American Statistical Association and of the Society of Labor Economists. Abraham received her Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University in 1982 and her B.S. in economics from Iowa State University in 1976.

Katharine G. Abraham (born August 28, 1954) is an American economist who is the director of the Maryland Center for Economics and Policy, and a professor of survey methodology and economics[5] at the University of Maryland. She was commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics from 1993–2001 and a member of the Council of Economic Advisers from 2011–2013.
Abraham holds a bachelor of science degree in economics from Iowa State University (1976) and a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard University (1982). She was an assistant professor at MIT's Sloan School of Management and a research associate at the Brookings Institution before joining the faculty at the University of Maryland in 1988.

Katharine G. Abraham is a former member of the Council of Economic Advisers and was responsible for offering the President objective advice on the formulation of economic policy. During her time on the Council of Economic Advisers, Abraham was on leave from the University of Maryland, where she is a faculty associate in the Maryland Population Research Center and a professor in the Joint Program in Survey Methodology. Abraham’s research included work on employment and unemployment, labor market policy and the measurement of economic activity. Nominated by President William J. Clinton, Abraham served as Commissioner of the Bureau of Labor Statistics from 1993-2001. Prior to that, she held appointments in the Department of Economics, University of Maryland; the Brookings Institution; and the Sloan School of Management, Massachusetts Institute of Technology. She is a Fellow of the Society of Labor Economists and of the American Statistical Association; holds an honorary doctorate from Iowa State University; and is a past Vice-President of the American Economic Association. Dr. Abraham earned her B.S. in Economics from Iowa State University in 1976 and her Ph.D. in Economics from Harvard University in 1982.
