d. 1835. 1839, Mary Crowninshield Silsbee. Schoolteacher, then tutor in Havre de Grace, Maryland, teacher in Lancaster, MA; attended Phillips Exeter Academy 1809-1811; lifelong friend of John G. Palfrey; attended Harvard University (A.B. 1815, A.M. 1818); as an undergraduate, member of the Hasty Pudding. First pastor of the newly organized "First Independent Church of Baltimore", serving from 1819 to 1823; ordained by William Ellery Channing; Unitarian theorist; one of the founders of the American Unitarian Association; founder and editor of the Unitarian Miscellany and Christian Monitor; served as chaplain of the United States House of Representatives from 1821 to 1823 (preceded by John Nicholson Campbell, followed by John Brackenridge [c. 1772-1844]). Acting editor of North American Review 1817-1818; contributed to the National Intelligencer; bought the North American Review in 1824, edited it until 1830; founded and edited in 1830, the American Almanac and Repository of Useful Knowledge. Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences 1825; a member of the American Antiquarian Society 1827, served as its secretary for foreign correspondence 1846-1866. Research trips to London and Paris in 1828-1829; publications: The Writings of George Washington, Life of George Washington; controversy (charged with altering Washington's words) with Philip Henry Stanhope (Lord Mahon). Extensive conversation and correspondence with Alexis de Tocqueville, considerable influence on Democracy in America. Aided Henry D. Gilpin in preparing an edition of the Papers of James Madison (1840). In 1842 Sparks delivered 12 lectures on American history before the Lowell Institute in Boston. In 1838–1849 he was the first McLean Professor of Ancient and Modern History at Harvard. President of Harvard College 1849-1853 (preceded by Edward Everett [1794-1865] and followed by James Walker [1794-1874]), resided in the Treadwell-Sparks House. For several years he was a member of the Massachusetts Commonwealth Board of Education. Buried in Mount Auburn Cemetery.
