Emil Charles Danenberg, a musician who had been president of Oberlin College since 1975, died Saturday at Allen Memorial Hospital in Oberlin, Ohio, after several months of treatment for liver cancer. He was 64 years old.

Mr. Danenberg joined the Oberlin faculty in 1944 as an instructor in the Conservatory of Music. He became an associate professor in 1955 and professor of pianoforte five years later.

All the while, Mr. Danenberg toured widely, giving recitals in the United States, Canada and Europe. He made his New York debut in 1950 with a highly praised solo recital of piano pieces ranging from Bach to Bartok.

''It is rare that this town has opportunity to hear the kind of musicianship displayed at Times Hall last night,'' a reviewer wrote in The New York Times then. ''Thoughtfulness and musicality marked the entire event.'' 'Conservatory Is Fortunate'

One of Mr. Danenberg's return engagements at Town Hall marked the centenary of the Oberlin Conservatory in 1967. Robert Sherman, reviewing Mr. Danenberg's performance in The Times, praised its intelligence and wrote that ''if he teaches as well as he plays, the conservatory is fortunate indeed to have him.''

''His performance,'' Mr. Sherman said, ''had flair and fire, and even when he chose perilously rapid tempos, his commanding technical proficiency kept him right on course.''

Mr. Danenberg was born July 30, 1917, in Hong Kong of European parents. He came to this country at the age of 9. He was graduated from the University of California at Los Angeles and spent two years there as a teaching assistant in music before going to Oberlin. Continuing as professor of pianoforte, he was named acting dean of the Oberlin Conservatory in 1970 and dean the following year. Music Program Expanded

Oberlin College, a liberal arts school, has long combined high academic quality with one of the most eminent college conservatories. As dean, Mr. Danenberg expanded the music programs to include such courses as Afri can-American musi c.

The importance of the conservatory was recognized with Mr. Danenberg's election as president of Oberlin College in 1975. He was re-electe d to a five-year term in 1979.
