Cornue, Virginia, 1945-

Virginia Cornue, PhD, is a fiction and non-fiction author and award-winning women's rights activist. She is cultural anthropologist who conducted her research on women and gender redefinitions in post-Mao 1990s China. She is a part-time professor at Bloomfield College, Bloomfield, NJ.

In the 1970s and 1980s Virginia was the executive director of the National Organization for Women-NYC and its Service Fund during the fight for Roe v Wade and the Equal Rights Amendment. She subsequently headed the Women's Funding Coalition-NYC; and Newark (NJ) Emergency Services for Families. In 1989, she received the Newark (NJ) Humanitarian Services Award and in 1998 the NYC Susan B. Anthony Award for Advocacy and Service to Women. She earned a Ph.D. from Rutgers University in 2001 in Cultural Anthropology investigating gender and social changes in post-Mao China. After teaching in the Anthropology Department at Rutgers University New Brunswick, she joined the Sociology and Anthropology Department of Bloomfield College in Bloomfield, New Jersey where she teaches social inequality and gender and globalization part time. She currently writes full time. She is at work with co-author Linda Lombri on a fourth Sandra Troux Mystery and is researching another amazing Civil War letters history. She lives in Montclair, New Jersey with her daughter, a senior honors student at Brandeis University.

This collection contains the papers of feminist activist and scholar Virginia Cornue. The materials in this collection relate primarily to Cornue's involvement with a number of feminist and activist organization in New York and New Jersey in the 1970s and 1980s, including the National Organization for Women in New York City, National Youth Employment Project, the Women's Funding Coalition in New York City, and Newark Emergency Services for Families. The collection also contains materials related to Cornue's academic career, including notebooks from her university courses and research in cultural anthropology and gender studies.
