<p> John R. Nay was sworn in as U.S. ambassador to Suriname on August 13, 2009.</p>

<p>Born circa 1953 in Louisiana to Jack and Geraldine Nay, John Nay grew up in Battle Creek, Michigan. He earned a BA (1976) and MA (1977) in History from Andrews University and a Masters in National Security Strategy from the National Defense University in the late 1990s. In 1974, he served his Seventh Day Adventist mission in Japan as an English teacher, an experience he later said “played a significant part in my joining the Foreign Service by helping to stimulate my interest in international affairs and the world.”</p>

<p>Nay joined the State Department in 1977. His first overseas assignment was in Taiwan, from 1978 to 1980, followed by a posting to Singapore from 1980 to 1982. He returned to the U.S. to serve as an analyst on Cambodia and Korea from 1982 to 1985. Nay served at the U.S. Consulate General in Calgary, Canada, from 1985 to 1989, returning to the scene of his first foreign posting to serve as consular chief at the American Institute in Taiwan, in Taipei, Taiwan, from 1990 to 1993. Nay served in Washington, D.C., as Deputy Director for Pacific Island Affairs from 1993 to 1995, and then headed to Africa to be Regional Consular Officer for southern Africa, based in Johannesburg, South Africa, from 1996 to 1999. Continuing to serve overseas, he became Minister Counselor for Consular Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, India, from 1999 to 2002. Back in Washington, DC, Nay served from 2002 to 2003 as a Senior Inspector in the State Department’s Office of the Inspector General, and from 2003 to 2006 as Office Director for African Regional and Security Affairs in the State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs. He returned to Canada to be Consul General in Toronto from 2006 to 2009.</p>

<p>Nay is language qualified in Chinese (Mandarin). He and his wife, Judith Ashdon Nay, have three children, Janelle, Jaclyn, and Jordan.<p>

<p>Ambassador John R. Nay began his service as Diplomat in Residence at the University of Illinois –Chicago in September 2012, immediately after finishing three years of services as the 13th U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Suriname. During his tenure as Ambassador to Suriname, Ambassador Nay emphasized the importance of human rights, freedom of the press, respect for law, and the value of protecting Suriname’s rich environmental diversity in both its rain forests and its marine areas. One of his best memories of his tenure in Suriname was when he and an Embassy and press team made four lengthy bicycle trips that traversed the entire width of Suriname and also went into the interior as far as the roads went. During their bicycle trips, Ambassador Nay and his fellow bikers visited Peace Corps volunteers where they were working, enjoyed meeting with Surinamers across the whole country, and highlighted the beauty of nature, the importance of conservation and environmental preservation, focused attention on the environmental devastation caused by illegal gold miners in a national park, and underlined the importance of fitness.</p>

<p>Ambassador Nay is a career member of the Senior Foreign Service, holding the rank of Minister Counselor. Before arriving in Suriname, Ambassador Nay was the Consul General at the U.S. Consulate in Toronto, Canada. Prior to serving in Toronto, he was the Office Director for African Regional & Security Affairs in the State Department’s Bureau of African Affairs. He joined that office in April 2003, after serving as a Senior Inspector in the State Department’s Office of the Inspector General. He served as Minister Counselor for Consular Affairs at the U.S. Embassy in New Delhi, from 1999-2002, and as Regional Consular Officer for southern Africa based in Johannesburg, South Africa from 1996-1999.</p>

<p>In Washington, Ambassador Nay also has served as Deputy Director for Pacific Island Affairs, and previously as an analyst, working on Cambodia issues for two years and on Korean affairs for one year. Ambassador Nay also had previous stints as Consular chief in Taipei, Taiwan and in Calgary, Canada, as well as earlier tours of duty in Singapore and Taiwan. <p>Ambassador Nay holds Masters Degrees from Andrews University and from the National Defense University. He has received three Superior Honor Awards and four Senior Performance Awards. A native of Michigan, he and his wife Judith Ashdon Nay, have three adult children and two grandchildren.</p>

<p>Ambassador John R. Nay was invited to become President of the IRLA in October 2016 due both to his international experience and his interest in advancing the cause of religious liberty.</p>

<p>Formerly a career member of the United States Senior Foreign Service, Ambassador Nay was unanimously confirmed by the U.S. Senate in July 2009 to serve as the U.S. Ambassador to the Republic of Suriname. During his service in Suriname (September 2009-September 2012), Ambassador Nay particularly emphasized the importance of human rights, freedom of the press, and the value of protecting our environmental heritage. Ambassador Nay particularly enjoyed interacting with Suriname’s diverse religious communities, which shared impressively good mutual relations. Another of his best memories of Suriname was when he and a press and Embassy team made four lengthy bicycle trips that traversed the entire width of Suriname and also went into the interior as far as the roads went. <p>Prior to his service in Suriname, Ambassador Nay was the U.S. Consul General in Toronto, Ontario, Canada from 2006-2009, and served as Consul General in New Delhi, India from 1999-2002. He had earlier tours of duty in Taiwan, Singapore, Canada, and South Africa as well as in Washington working on issues relating to Africa, Southeast Asia, North Asia, and Oceania. In all he had assignments on four continents and served temporary assignments on two others.</p>

<p>During the course of his career he frequently wrote and edited religious freedom reports, human rights reports, and trafficking in persons reports, with the goal of helping people everywhere to enjoy freedom, human rights, and religious liberty.</p>

<p>Ambassador Nay retired from Foreign Service in 2013. He holds Masters Degrees from Andrews University and from the National Defense University, and is language qualified in Chinese (Mandarin). During his career he received three Superior Honor Awards and four Senior Performance Awards. A native of Michigan, he and his wife Judith Ashdon Nay, have three adult children and two grandchildren.</p>
