Jaffe, Louis Leventhal, 1905-1996

Louis L. Jaffe born in Seattle in 1905 ; spent much of youth in San Francisco ; graduated from John Hopkins University 1924 at age of 19 ; entered Class of 1928 at Harvard Law School ; served as editor of Harvard Law Review ; ranked third in graduating class ; became law clerk to Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis for three years ; After clerkship unsuccessfully entered workforce during height of Great Depression ; completed S.J.D. degree at Harvard Law School 1932 ; and two years later became attorney with Agricultural Adjustment Administration—agency of New Deal ; 1935 joined National Labor Relations Board as attorney ; 1936 Jaffe became professor at University of Buffalo School of Law ; became Dean in 1948 ; joined faculty of Harvard Law School 1950 ; fifteen years later published Judicial Control of Administrative Action ; his work on judicial review was widely commended and cited by other scholars and judges ; co-authored casebook Administrative Law: Cases and Materials, which became standard text for law students all over country ; served as commentator and expert adviser on issues such as regulation by Interstate Commerce Commission, the Federal Communication Commission, and the Federal Aviation Commission ; retired in 1976 ; spent next 20 years residing in Cambridge ; died at age of 90 on 11 December 1996 ; male gender ; American nationality ; English language ; associated places: Seattle, San Francisco, Baltimore, Cambridge, Buffalo.
