Born in New York City April 9, 1911 ; graduated from Clinton DeWitt High School 1925 ; City College of New York 1929 ; Columbia Law School 1933 ; After completing law degree entered private practice with firm Greenbaum, Wolff and Earnst ; remained at Greenbaum, Wolff and Earnst until 1942 ; joined the army, drafting procurement contracts ; 1943, Kaplan became part of group of military lawyers (headed by Supreme Court Justice Robert H. Jackson) ; drafted indictments at Nuremberg ; arrived at Harvard 1947 as a visiting professor ; remained at the school for twenty five years ; appointed to Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court 1972 ; 1983 reached the mandatory age of retirement from the bench ; Kaplan served as recall judge for Massachusetts Court of Appeals ; published numerous works individually and in collaboration ; best known for casebook on civil procedure published with Professor Robert H. Field 1953 ; An Unhurried View of Copyright (1967) grew out of a series of eponymously lectures delivered at Columbia University the previous year ; Kaplan died in Cambridge, Mass., on August 18, 2010.
